Affirmation

Do Affirmations Really Work?

There are people who claim that affirmations have helped them make significant changes in their lives and there are the others who argue that affirmations don’t work…

So, what’s the catch? Do affirmations really work?

What is an Affirmation?

Affirmation is a short, powerful statement where you affirm that what you want to be true is already true.

You can consciously choose words and create statements that will help you reprogram your subconscious mind and achieve desired changes in different areas of your life.

Do Affirmations Really Work?

How is it possible that for some people affirmations work and for the others don’t?

Well, in order to be effective, affirmations should be done in a certain way.

Keep reading if you want to find out how to make affirmations work for you.

How to Formulate an Affirmation?

Affirmations should be positive and formulated in a present moment as if the desired result has already happened.

Here are examples of properly formed affirmations:Affirmation

I am confident.

I am successful.

I attract only healthy relationships.

My healing is already in process.

I am grateful for my healthy body.

I am worthy and deserving of love.

It is important to use a present tense. For example, a statement such as “I want to be happy” is not good because you don’t want to remain in the state of wanting. You want to affirm something as it has already happened so you will want to use an affirmation such as “I am happy” instead.

Affirmation should be a positive statement. Your subconscious mind cannot differentiate between negative and positive. So, if you say “I am not poor”, your subconscious mind will ignore the word “not” and act upon the word “poor”. That’s why you have to use a positive statement such as “I am wealthy”.

Focus

Choose one area of your life that needs improvement and write down what would you like to be true using short statements. Then repeat them out loud with conviction and confidence for at least 5 minutes 3 times a day.

It’s great to have different goals, but you have to put your focus on improving one area of your life at a time because focusing on different subjects simultaneously can confuse your subconscious mind.

The Best Time for Affirmations

Your subconscious mind is most open to suggestions while you are in the lower “alpha” brainwaves state. “Alfa” is the frequency range between “beta” and “theta”. In this state of mind, you are relaxed and calm.

This frequency range bridges the gap between your conscious and subconscious mind, and from that state, you can access your subconscious mind much easier than from “beta” brainwave state, which is associated with normal waking consciousness and a heightened state of alertness and critical reasoning.

You produce most “alpha” waves when you are in a meditative state or just when you wake up in the morning or before falling asleep in the evening. That’s the time when you’re more receptive to suggestions.

Feelings – The Most Important Part

To be effective, affirmations should be repeated with feelings. Saying words without feelings is like saying them without intention.

Affirmation, I am happySee yourself as if the result has already happened. Feel it. Sense it with all your senses. To help yourself feel the feeling, use words that create positive feelings and place one hand (it doesn’t matter which one) on your heart while repeating affirmations.

Once you are emotionally attached to those affirmations, they will impress themselves into your subconscious mind.

Use your imagination to see yourself in the state you want to be. It is going to trigger the same neural networks in your brain as if you were in this state for real because the brain cannot distinguish what’s real from imaginary.

How Long Does it Take to See Results?

Every person reacts differently to the change process. Different people need a different amount of time to get results from the affirmations. If you use them correctly and repeat them more often, it’s more likely that you will need less time to see results. Usually, it is considered that it takes about 30 consecutive days to see results from the affirmations, but if you do your own research, you could find it to be anything from 21 to 90 days in a row.

Conclusion

Affirmations can be very powerful if you do them “the right way”. If you just read or write them without any feelings while in the waking, beta brainwaves state they will have little effect.

To see results you have to repeat affirmations every day while in lower alpha brainwaves states and you also have to involve your feelings while repeating them. I would suggest repeating them for at least 30 consecutive days.

  1. This is a very interesting and empowering post. I have never read anything on affirmations on this much detail. While I have heard of them I have never given them this much thought. I like the idea of positive statements because I do not like focusing on negative things in life. As a matter of fact, I am very much the type of person who likes to find the good in everything. I am going to try to use this technique with my health. Thanks for this, it is very encouraging.

    1. Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you found this post interesting and encouraging. Good luck with your affirmations!

  2. I do affirmations every night and every morning ( if I have time). I do meditation to get my mind in the right state to accept the affirmations. I definitely know that they work. Great read

  3. Hi Blanka,
This was a great post and something most of us should read and remember. I definitely know that affirmations work for me. I find I do this when I go to bed and first thing in the morning. I wake up very early and love that quiet time to do some affirmations and also to let my mind wander. It is a good time then for planning and dreaming up ideas.
    All the best,
    Jill
